The Original Wonkatania
Last year we decided to throw our hat in the ring and compete in the first rail car regatta in Santa Rosa. Our idea, to create a viking ship to be powered by the four of us created out of 8 10 speed bikes. Our Team name, The Uff-Da’s. Our ship, Welded Sykkelen (Norwegian for welded bikes). The regatta was held in Santa Rosa and was a timed race with competing rail cars. The rules, no more than four people and it has to be human powered. Oh, and it had to ride on the railroad tracks. We did well, so this year we’re back!!! Follow our progress here as we turn the Welded Sykkelen into the Wonkatania!
Lyrics to The Wonkatania :
There’s no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There’s no knowing where we’re rowing
Or which way the river’s flowing
Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a’blowing?
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of hell a’glowing?
Is the grisly reaper mowing?
Yes!
The danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they’re certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!

Hello Wonkas and Oompaloompas!
I’m Jill with the Community Media Center, Santa Rosa. I’m producing the regatta for the internet/tv airing and hoped to get some video of your team working on the contraption. If you’re interested, could you get in touch with me early next week? Thanks!!

Beautiful! I was following your production of the Wonkatania and I’m not disappointed! You guys did a fabulous job with her and despite the ups and downs that you encountered (with a few de-railings) you pulled it off so nicely! I think you guys got the most cheers!
Hats off to you for a wonderful job! I hope to see her again next year!
